fall student art show – fiber arts

IMG_1409

The show was fantastic, it was a real pleasure to see the culmination of 15 weeks of work in one place! Really proud of each student, who explored ways of incorporating fiber art techniques like dyeing, spinning, knitting, crochet, embroidery, felting & weaving in their own special way. here are a few highlights.

cabled knit bracelet – all about bamboo fiber

DSC_0003

the cable knit bracelet this piece is still in progress, but well on its way! I handspun this bamboo top into a silky smooth yarn earlier this fall as a sample for my fiber arts class.  Couldn’t wait to do something with my lovely bamboo handspun, but only the other day thought of a great use- [...]

Aged Moss woven scarf

this pretty little thing is a sample for a much larger body of work, yet to be named, but very much in production. hand spun and dyed, I wove this on a 24 x 36 wooden frame loom – a fun and quick way to test out different yarn and weaving combinations. I [...]

Calling this one old fashioned romance. I hand dyed & spun these two wool singles ages ago- they have been sitting next to each other that whole time- so I finally plied them together- they really were meant to be together.

foliage inspired

Handspun, dyed & plied! Foliage inspired for sure.

I’ve been in the kettle dyeing quite a bit lately! Handspun, dyed & plied. These are all inspired by the fantastic foliage this year.

shetland & angora handspun

one of my favorites to spin – shetland wool, blended with some local angora fiber – all natural color, no dye, navajo plied.

hand spinning ramie – a first!

my first experience spinning ramie – far softer than I’d ever expect a bast plant fiber to be! it is naturally dyed with alkanet bark to this perfect pale dusty purple.

examples in plying

my samples for two & three plied yarns – this one is hand dyed three different ways!

mossy green handspun yarn

Kettle dyed handspun wool yarn- call it a Mossy green

clown barf

I affectionately call this one skein Clown Barf. Lightly felted wool spun in two singles and plied together. Teaching this technique in fiber class next week.

natural dyeing with annatto seeds

Naturally dyed the wool fiber deep yellow with annatto seeds, hand spun- then stuck in the crimson red acid dye bath to soak up the excess- wish the photo did it justice- the color is surreal!

handspun local fiber

Handspun local fibers blended then spun- all natural color, no dye.

crimson handpsun

Handspun wool still on the wheel- kettle dyed with crimson red acid dye.

waiting to be set

expect a fiber/yarn bonanza the next two weeks…can you tell I’m teaching spinning in fiber arts class? here is a pile of freshly hand spun yarn - blended colonial fibers imported from the U.K in teal mountain on left and purple twist on right.
