Dyed Mokume Shibori

By trish

The process of mokume shibori is incredibly labor & time intensive, but boy does it work beautifully! The goal is to create the effect of a tree’s bark, both in dye resist and in thermal forming of the handmade wool felt.

First up is the stitching of the fabric…

Next up, the tightening of the rows of stitches…

Then, my favorite…dyeing!

On to pulling out stitches…

Lay out for drying…

Voila! Beautifully patterned felt.

Still have much more work to go on the final piece, but the backdrop of felt bark is set – thinking the wired pieces need less wire, more gems!
